Overall I've got to say this contest was a lot of fun and I hope it is repeated again soon so we can all give it another go! I like the idea of the status update as the writing medium, it's a fun challenge :)

My story starts today, Friday the 27th of February, at 6:30 PM Eastern time (GMT - 5:00).

When I enter that into Microsoft Word without the quotation marks on either end, I get 128 characters including spaces. This is just an example of one, but there are other updates that seem to do this as well. Maybe I'm just not looking at it properly?

I was just preparing for the contest, and I've noticed while looking at other people's submissions that some updates get cut off at less than 140 characters. I see that David also seems to have noticed this issue. Is there a way to avoid this when I start posting my story?
