Hi Carrie, great question! My family stayed in the cottage that inspired the novel on a summer vacation in 2008. It's unique architecture-it was shaped like a boat-made me wonder who had built it and who/what inspired the unusual but befitting design. Thus, sparking the fictional history of Tom and Margaret Walker. Adding to that, my family took an arduous kayak ride out to Monroe Island, a place that plays a significant role in the mystery that ensues.
