Making A Character: Things To Consider

No Mary Sues/Gary Stus

A Mary Sue or Gary Stu, is a seemingly "flawless" character. They often have an extremely easy or extremely hard life, but they manage to deal with everything that is thrown their way with grace and poise, never missing a step or second-guessing themselves. They tend to have simple, likable personalities, and are the perfect blend of everything. And if they do have one or two negative character traits or flaws, they're often silly things, such as the inability to paint their nails without messing up.

So how do you avoid making a character like this?

Try to avoid creating your character as a glorified version of yourself. If you do what to base your character off of yourself or a friend, however, be honest and write down their flaws. Think of realistic flaws, and realistic ways to react to certain scenarios. Understand that your character has a defined personality and that personality should affect how you roleplay them and what happens in their history--or at least their reaction and actions in their history.

Think about your characters flaws--what don't they like about themselves? What are they afraid of? And why?

Another special note will be for any characters with powers:

• If they were born with powers they will probably be easier to control than if they suddenly obtained them, Spiderman style. Think about what their powers are, and how they might affect everyday life.

• If they somehow get powers when they're older. What was their adjustment period like? How long did it take to get everything under control? Were there any really big incidents or mistakes that they made? How did this affect your character?

The first thing that you should know is that this plot takes place a good 20-30 years after The Avengers. Basically that means that the plot is not going to centre around our favourite heroes, but their children.

For the children of really main heroes, there will be a set number of places open. You will have to apply for one of those character positions. Main characters consist of all of the Avengers themselves, of course, but also characters like Spiderman and the Fantastic Four.

Yes, all of the characters in this rp don't have to be directly related to the six avengers, however, if they are related to someone, it must be a marvel character.

So what kinds of characters are we accepting? And which ones do you need to apply for?

Anyone can make an Agent of S.H.E.I.L.D., an Agent of HYDRA, a "mutant" character or a character with powers. Anyone can make an Asgardian character, however, you must apply to make any Asgardians that are featured in the Avengers and Thor movies. If you wish to do this, put a little bit of research time into Norse mythology, select a god and set on to your merry character-making (remember that their powers will be related to what they're the god or goddess of. For example, Thor, god of thunder, can summon lightning and thunder, and is extra strong). Anyone can also make a character that eventually turns into a villain, or is a villain.

Can you play one of Marvel's Characters?
Yes. Kind of. While the story doesn't revolve around them (and they will be much older than when we saw them in the movies), you can request to make these characters. However, in order for you to write one of the Marvel characters, if you wish to do so, I want to see good plot ideas; big plot ideas, and an example of how you would write them. Also, don't think that making one of these characters gets you out of writing a profile--you'll have to do that, along with collaborating with everyone making that hero's family.
