I finished yesterday and I really liked it! I agree with everything you said, Bathsheba definitely needed to grow up to appreciate Gabriel. I was so glad he became successful and that he got the girl in the end, although I'm not sure she'll ever really deserve him.
I was a little shocked that Boldwood actually killed Troy! I knew he was odd, but that was just crazy! I was so irritated when he kept trying to make Bathsheba promise to marry him in 6 years. I just wanted to yell at her to get a backbone and say no. I was creeped out by all of the things he had secretly bought for her and stashed away in the house.
I'm really excited about the movie now!

Spring Break put me far behind in my reading but I'm trying to catch up this week. Poor Mr. Boldwood, I feel badly for him. He seems like a nice guy and she's just playing with his emotions. I get the feeling that Sgt. Troy is just a flirt, sort of Wickham-ish if you know what I mean. I'm curious to see which man she chooses, if any.

I like Gabriel, but feel a little sorry for him. He seems set apart, not quite fitting in anywhere. I think it's interesting that Hardy often has Gabriel observing people without their knowledge, several times with Bathsheba and later when he's hidden in the hay and overhears the drivers' conversation. I like Bathsheba's confidence and independence but I dislike her vanity and pride. I'm hoping she'll change as the story goes on.
