The fact that this book was first published in 1847 really amazed me. I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel from that period before. It made me curious about what life might have been like for Charlotte Brontë.
Knowing the time in which it was written helped me put certain social constructs and situations into perspective.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I devoured it like I would binge-watch a TV series. I liked that it’s written in the first person — it feels like I got to be there with Jane and accompany her throughout her life.
The only part I almost stopped reading was when St. John Rivers wanted to marry Jane. I thought: After everything we’ve been through, this can’t possibly be how the story ends. So I was kind of relieved that Jane and Mr. Rochester ended up together — even though I’m not really a fan of him either I was still secretly rooting for them.
I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
