i had read this book half way through when i was in the hospital. a nurse tech had generously given me his own copy, fully annotated and worn with love. i feel like i’ve reached full circle. during the first time of reading this book, i was lost and terrified of absolutely everything, guiding my way through life with anxiety. recently i’ve found my joy again, reliving my childhood. i’ve always been conscious through nature, so this book really emphasized living by the way of omens, and talking to the soul of the world.

my favorite part was towards the end when santiago was talking with the forces of earth, finding relativity between himself and the sources of life. “when i first reached through to it, i thought the soul of the world was perfect. but later, i could see that it was like other aspects of creation, and had its own passions and wars. it is we who nourish the soul of the world, and the world we live in will be either better or worse, depending on whether we become better or worse. and that's where the power of love comes in. because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are."
