Read the acknowledgments and the bio about the author before you get a book. You can sometimes weed out books by doing that. I was going to get a book at the library, but then I read the author's bio, and it turns out the author was a member of the LGBTQ. The ones I've seen before like that ended up having that in the books. It doesn't work all the time, but it's a useful trick I have found.
