I always recommend this to adults who like the Sookie Stackhouse books, because it has the same irreverence, humor, and cast of strange creatures.

This isn't a series where one book will explain everything. I've read the second volume, too, and it definitely helps piece together the mystery.

I especially love the use of the margin notes, detailing guides for agents in the field.

This one reminded me in many ways of the computer game "Gone Home." Same quiet, creepy vibe, same (but different) sibling relationship.
