What a ride! Loved the mysteries and the plot twists. I thought it was interesting that people always seem to want to help Harry. From the Captain of the Devonian to his rescuers on the Kansas Star. I wonder if that theme will continue.I think having people think he is dead and taking on another identity was consistent with Harry's character. It solves a lot of problems for a number of people he cares about. He even lets his mom know that he is OK.
It was disappointing to have Old Jack Tar die. I wonder whether his presence and his works will surface in the next book?
Poor Emma. What will happen to the child? At least her family has resources, unlike Maisie.
Maybe having Harry incarcerated during WWII will have positive outcomes. Only Time Will Tell.
How tragic for Harry and Emma. It is unfortunate that someone didn't intervene before the wedding day. Archer is artful in the way he introduces and solves mysteries by presenting the tale from different characters' viewpoints.
Emma is an admirable character, much like Harry's mother. It seems that Harry and Emma's progeny may also be raised by a single mother.
Giles is turning out to be quite an upstanding young man. Perhaps it is Harry and Deakin's influence. Definitely not a chip off the ol' block. The plot is thickening with Emma and Harry's relationship. The end of the book should be interesting.
I thought Maisie and Ed Atkins were an item and he was helping out with expenses. I was not completely shocked when I learned Maisie was working at the speakeasy, though. She is a hard working woman and dedicated to Harry and will do whatever it takes. She is boxed into a corner at this point. She needed money fast, otherwise Harry could not return to Bristol Grammar School. She really does not have a lot of options.
What a wonderful man Jack Tar is. I enjoyed gathering more insights about him. It seems Harry and Jack have helped each other. Perhaps Harry gave Jack's life more purpose. Maybe the relationship between Harry and Jack replaced the relationship between Jack and his estranged father.
Hugo is such a scoundrel. I am wondering why he would back the loan for the tea shop. Would he change the terms of the loan if Maisie was successful. I guess he was counting on her failing so he could turn the screws on her.It seems incredulous that no one pushed the issue of Arthur Clifton being welded in the hull. I guess it would have been too late after they realized he didn't clock in the following morning.
This is my first Jeffrey Archer book, but I don't think he would serve up the culprit for the arson to the reader that easily. Bob the baker would be likely suspect, but it may be someone less obvious who is the arsonist. We shall see.I, like a few others, wonder about Maisie's decision to have a premarital fling. It seems out of character for her. Having Hugo rape Maisie would be more a propos for both of their characters.
I have heard good things a about Jeffrey Archer books, but this is my first time reading one. I love it so far. A question was asked earlier about who is our favorite character. It has to be Jack Tar for me. He is very intriguing and I can wait to discover how the mystery surrounding him unfolds.
It was discouraging to read about Harry's difficulties at St. Bedes. However, Harry has an incredible support system surrounding him, including his friends. I wonder why people are so attracted to Harry and go to the lengths they do to help him?
There are a lot of interesting elements that have been laid out so far and I can't wait to see how they develop.
Thanks for this thread. This is my first time in a Goodreads group. I like the idea that the discussions are segmented so readers can participate in the sections they have read. However, I have come across some spoiler land mines in general comments and other places, which is really irritating. I know people do this unintentionally, but it would be nice if folks could use the spoiler protocol. I am not sure whether I want to participate in other groups until I have finished books.
