123947 Hi Nada,

Whenever someone is writing something that contains a spoiler, they are supposed to use the spoiler html code found in the link that says (some html is okay).

It will apprear like this: (view spoiler)

That way, Goodreads will automatically hide that section unless you click to read. Hopefully others will practice this!

Thanks for posting!
Kelsey

Hi Linda! You have to click on "more discussions" to see all of the chapter topics.

123947 The conclusion! In this thread I want to hear your thoughts on both the section and the entire book. Did you like the way it ended? Will you or have you already begun reading the next book in the series, THE SINS OF THE FATHER?

123947 I adore Emma. I love that she is pursuing an education. I love her relationship with Harry. I love that she has the sense to doubt her father. But still not sure what to think about this whole brother/sister situation! The end of this section ends with a bang! Old Jack does what we all know must have been very difficult, but VERY necessary. Would you have intervened the way Old Jack did?

I wanted to take a moment to discuss the structure of writing here. I really enjoy the way that Archer will tell one aspect of the story several times over, but from different character's perspectives. For instance, seeing the growth of Emma and Harry’s relationship from Harry’s perspective is quite different than Emma’s. Do you like the way this is structured?

123947 Off to the Highlands with Giles and Harry! Turns out Giles is quite the Sherlock, spotting his father’s private detective and then jumping out of a moving car to dodge him. I like this side of Giles!

What does everyone think about Harry and Emma’s blossoming romance? Can I be the first to say…eeeeeew?

We, along with Harry and Giles, learn something quite shocking about Maisie in this section. Did you guess what Maisie’s new career path was before it was revealed?

123947 “Harry would claim, many years later, that I had shaped his whole life. In truth, it was he who saved mine.”—Old Jack Tar

I think this was my favorite section so far! We finally get some answers about why Old Jack lives in the train cart, who helped pay for the watch Harry bought for Maisie, and who helped Harry get the choral scholarship. It seems Old Jack was behind nearly all of Harry’s good fortune. What do you think about Old Jack and the way that he “imprisoned” himself out of the guilt he felt for killing 11 men in war? Why do you think Old Jack has taken such an interest in Maisie and Harry?

123947 Finally…a glimpse into the mind of Hugo Barrington! I kept hoping there was some redeemable quality about the man, but alas, there is not. What do you think about Hugo? What do you think drives him to be so evil? Insecurity? Fear?

I really like Detective Inspector Blakemore—if only his wit would outmatch Hugo’s power and position. So far, money seems to “solve all” for Hugo. And poor Maisie! As if the odds being completely against her wasn’t enough, now Hugo is eliminating every single chance of hope for the woman, and she doesn’t even know it.

Old Jack Tar is next!

123947 What does everyone think of Maisie Clifton? She’s had a lot of bad luck, starting with her husband disappearing (dying?), her brother being arrested, and her teashop burning down. But she’s a hard worker and a caring mother. In the last bit of this section, Maisie’s luck seems to return with the arrival of the insurance check for the teashop. Do you think this good luck will last?

The plot concerning Harry’s “father” certainly thickens in this section. Anyone have a theory on what really happened to Arthur? What was Hugo’s involvement? I can’t wait to learn more! And on a side note, how does Old Jack know so much about everything?

Again, feel free to share/post and of your own questions or thoughts!

123947 Chapters 1-10 (Maisie/Harry)

Ten chapters in and we’re about to switch from Harry’s story to Maisie’s (after a brief insight into Maisie’s story in the prelude).

I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks so far!

Who is your favorite character at this point? I am so intrigued by Old Jack. I have a feeling he knows a lot more than he lets on.

Harry meets and befriends two boys at school, Giles and Deakins. All three boys have such unique personalities: Giles comes from a wealthy family but has a bit of a rebellious side, Deakins is ingenious but socially challenged, and Harry comes from a humble background but has a musical gift. Which character is most like you as a child? Why?

Have any of you formulated your own questions and/or theories after reading the first 10 chapters? Share away!

Hi Chinmay! Because this giveaway is so much larger than the usual giveaways (1,000 copies!), it is going to take a little bit longer to get the books mailed out to all of the readers. But don't worry, it's worth the wait!
