1229937 Thanks for the info! I've read mostly various German versions but also some English. Because they have to invent corresponding jokes, new translations keep appearing with each generation, perhaps less so in the future - I have read books where I was aware on each page that it would work in other languages flawlessly (not always a compliment but works for some styles :))

1229937 So much excitement for one evening! An escaped prisoner shooting at people (at her!) and the vicar succumbing to a heart attack. Lady Milton hadn't enjoyed herself this much in years.

That's why I considered suggesting this book to Mrs. Geraghty. Overall it's not bloody enough for her though, and no nudity.

1229937 Thank you for clarifying, good to know!

Can you read the French originals? I have various translations, and it's not possible to guess what the original jokes were, so wildly different were those translations. I had wanted to collect one run, as I only ever got really tattered torn copies, but maybe the older ones were closer to the original than the modern ones, I couldn't tell.

Literally my thoughts at my last book, will quote it later (have trouble getting around): I shouldn't encourage her. But also: is this really evil enough for her! ;)

1229937 "Rook", I thought the title (with link) and cover (with link) showed up, doesn't it for everyone? # 96 (cover with an animal with a connection - > "if people were like bird watching", flight traffic controller, Hog's shirt, etc.). It also fits 93 and one more.

1229937 "Exclamation marks, he had discovered, made even the most calamitous things sound as if they might be fun or, at the worst, a precursor to a joke."

I had chosen Atkinson's latest for the challenge anyway, but that line perfectly summarised why Foil and Hog were waiting expectantly for the punchline when Arms was shouting "Lads, the bags!" in shocked realisation that they had gone.

1229937 Oh I understand very much wanting to have the right cover. I had an offline programme for this that probably stopped working for me because I kept combining covers and blurbs the way I saw fit. I hadn't noticed GR had stopped that, it still did when I was last here, which had been ideal. ... I guess considering I'm back here for a group, I shouldn't go off to another format. But thank you! :)

1229937 Melissa, I don't know storygraph, does it have advantages over GoodReads in logging your books?

I know that only too well, I can't access my bank account for months due to the required three different passwords, and now all these now accounts for FAH ...

Once again your post hadn't been visible when I created a tumblr account. I can't actually find yours, so I'm wondering if you can see mine, linked in the previous post?

I have also sent a request to your FB group :)

1229937 ETA: I've created a tumblr group blog which I can add members to (by their email or tumblr), same name as all your others, let's so a) if it works b) if there are interested parties :)

1229937 I've been on Tumblr since it started and could deal with that platform. I just checked with Emma and Lisa's old page was not a subpage of the FAHn group. In fact I saw everyone just posted in the main group and never on the challenge FB page. I guess it's just a question of whether the group as a whole/the admins are fine with doing it the same way again.

1229937 Melissa, if it were easier for participants to informally chat with each other, I would research how to create a FB "page". Can you or someone else let me know what you'd prefer, if just staying in this thread is enough?
ETA: I tried to create a page, that would be easy, but for some reason FB doesn't let me get through with it.

Donatella, I agree, although I found out that even tumblr now has "groups", one base is enough, with links elsewhere.

I wonder if/how we could now share what we plan to read? As inspiration for others, who might not have an idea for some of the prompts? I for one would love to know.

1229937 I think it is better to make a new one, if anyone is willing to do that - I can write on the one I make: please move to this page for the next challenge, or something like that?

Melissa, what would "making a new page" entail? You are already making something? I'd like to help if I can. (The 2023 FB page had so many fancy looking posts but no comments?)
