If you find yourself wanting to know a little bit more about the history of the characters and the history of the Love & Rockets comics, below are a couple of links of things I’ve found online that can give you a quick primer.
This is an interview with Jaime from the Los Angeles Times. This one has a lot of great background on Love & Rockets and the characters of Maggie and Hopey, about whom we will be reading this coming month.

This is a link from NPR's All Things Considered in 2002 about the history of Love & Rockets. It’s about 7 minutes.

And for a local tie-in, this is an article from The Little Village Mag about Jaime Hernandez's appearance at ICAF (an academic comics conference) which was held at St. Ambrose this past April.

If you do find yourself wanting to read more Love & Rockets the library has most, but not all, of the collected volumes. Jaime said in the LA Times Interview that he has no recommended starting point for Love & Rockets or recommended reading order. So, if you enjoy Is This How You See Me? come to the library grab another volume and dive right in.

A brief interview with Laila Lalami from NPR's All Things Considered:

John mentioned that the section of John Lewis travelling north with his uncle reminded him of the song ‘Baloney Again’ by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. It’s about the experience of eating sandwiches in the car and being unable to stop at a restaurant while travelling due to segregation. Here’s a Youtube link to Mark Knopfler performing the song live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZyBm...
Courtney and John also brought up the song ‘Here’s to Mississippi’ by Phil Ochs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7fgB...
This is an episode from the podcast 99% Invisible about the Green Book a kind of travel guide for black motorists that helped them plan where they could stop for food, lodging, gas, bathrooms and etc. while travelling. While not referenced directly in March, it did come up in our discussion (see above) and it’s an interesting story. https://99percentinvisible.org/episod...
If you are really into podcasts, Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History has done a couple of episodes about history surrounding the Civil Rights Movement. This one is about Civil Rights March in Birmingham and the story behind an iconic image from the march: http://revisionisthistory.com/episode...
This one is about Brown vs. The Board of Education: http://revisionisthistory.com/episode...
We also discussed the PBS documentaries ‘Eyes on the Prize’ (DVD 323.0973 EY) and ‘Freedom Riders’ (DVD 323.1196 AM) both of which are available at the library, call numbers in parentheses.

Several years ago, PBS' Frontline produced an episode with Atul Gawande based on Being Mortal. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/fi...

This is only tangentially related to our book. However, I thought those of you that enjoy knowing more about the authors we read might find this to be interesting and worthy of a couple minutes of your time.

Thanks to everyone for coming tonight and for such a wonderful discussion. The discussion tonight led me to change my rating from 2-stars to 3-stars. I figured any book capable of provoking such an enjoyable back and forth must be worthy of at least 3-stars.
