The real Detective Stephen Lavender of the Bow Street Police Office was dispatched to investigate the robbery and beating of 87 year old William Sculthorpe and his son in 1818. The time frame was changed to 1810 to allow the story to be set within the time frame of the series. Billy Sculthorpe was given Down Syndrome to allow the author to further explore a family connection with the disability in the early 19th century (From the Author's Note)
