Hello Hannah! A fresh addict! lol
While I don't automatically hate 1st person narrative, it's not often done WELL. Rune just leaps office the page as a well-formed character. There's a lot of commentary & interaction by other characters. And the surrounding characters are equally vivid.
Just have one brief comment about the beginning of "Half House". Rune talks about how the magic can enforce things in a somewhat capricious manner. This is SO interesting and pops up throughout the series. It's a very flexible rule for an author, but also true to the rules of wild fae magic :D
Oh and I'm in the camp that Rune felt backed into a corner regarding the sigil exchange with LL. Sigils are what help him and Brand survive. And Rune is ALWAYS thinking of keeping Brand protected. And then she's got him chained down with a raid going on, a dragon whizzing around (lol), etc. What I'd call a high-stress situation.
The VERY first time I read this book, I was blown away cover to cover. I LOVE this series. I love the pace, the details that mean something to characterization, plot development, etc vs just boring details. So after many more reads, here's a pile of questions, in no order, for the prologue & first few chapters that might eventually have answers. But until then, I'm hanging:1. Did the servants get out ok? I mean KD says they're drugged, right?
2. How old were Rune's parents? Did he ever have living or deceased older siblings?
3. Why did Lord Tower take him in? Was he in Rune's life as a child or just after "the fall"?
3. Lady Lovers was a very close neighbor as far as I can tell. Had they really never met?
4. If Rune is on this raid, isn't he entitled to any of the "loot"? He doesn't seem to even consider it a possibility, but ...?
Comments:
Yep, I think Rune's behavior swings a lot to being immature. But it's just been Brand and himself since they were teens and they definitely feed off each other's juvenile behavior.
In the prologue, when Rune slips into the old lady's conversation about himself, Brand's reaction is one of the most compelling characterizations of their bond. It happens immediately and strongly. I LOVE that!
After the first couple of read-throughs, I've become more bothered by... [removed, wrong thread!]
Hello,I haven't really done a managed read-along before (because reasons). I see the four Week 1 topics and had a general question. What exactly are they used for (other than being on topic): For Q&A only? Any/all relevant comments? During that relevant week only or can we go back later on with follow up questions?
Hello! How thrilling! I've basically adopted Rune and Brand and I live with them now. I'd invited them to move in with me but there's no room, heh
Truly, truly love these characters, this universe!!
:D
Me: I live in Silicon Valley and I co-founded and co-mod the LGBTQ/GSM Fantasy & Science Fiction group here on GR.
Also, I have a mischief of rats :D
Right now just Humperdoo & Oliver. Humperdoo is 2 lbs! Their brother, Inigo, died suddenly last week of a heart attack. :`(
We've fostered rescued rats or people's surprise litters for 2 decades. Some of my best babies I've had are Baby, Owen, Raki & Enzo, Bowie, Spike & Mike. Owen was part of a colony of albino rats dumped in a county park. He walked right up to the first human who stopped to check on them.
Anyway, yay for this group!
