I think a very good way to discover lesser-known fantasy would be to cruise around book blogging sites. I'm working the other side of this, submitting my book to them for review, but they'd be great for your intended goal as well. You'd be able to see what they've read and read their reviews before deciding what to take a chance on. There's an organized list of book bloggers at theindieview.com.

Like everyone else here, I have a fantasy book. I'm told it's enjoyable to read (that was my only goal in writing it).
