Anfenwick’s comments from the Net Work Book Club group.

If you look up Perceforest on Wikipedia you can find details of a 14th century version in which the 'prince' rapes the 'beauty'. It fitted into the culture of courtly tales, rather than folk or fairy stories. I didn't follow it any further back than that. If you go to the Sleeping Beauty page you can find a whole sequence of versions which would have to be verified of course.
