1143676 Also, some Effective "Altruist" creep manipulated one of my best friends, so I was naturally quite combative while reading Doing Good ""Better""... I suppose that radicalized me, too.

1143676 It was Stephen Kinzer, no doubt. Idunno much about his politics, but I read the chapter on Guatemala from Overthrow back in 2021, and just like that I went from a somewhat incoherent liberalism (motivated by disdain for the Trump administration after Hurricane Maria) to a staunch anti-capitalism. Then my dog peed on it, so I needed to fill the gaps elsewhere!

Walter Rodney pushed me further towards Marxism with How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, and I haven't looked back. Khalidi's The Hundred Years' War on Palestine was probably the third most formative work for me. Such great scholarship!
