anything relating to communism, capitalism, revolutionary thought, race, gender, sexuality, imperialism, war, or politics is fair game lol so keep the suggestions coming!

i just finished and i did not cry lol. i liked the book though, not as much as never let me go, but this had a much happier ending 😊

just did it! sorry i didn’t know that was a feature lol

i’m about halfway done and i can already tell it’s gonna make me cry 😭

i’m going to selfishly nominate a book i just bought to motivate myself to read it 😜 it’s “listen liberal: or, whatever happened to the party of the people?” by thomas frank. he was just on trueanon if anyone listens to that podcast!

i just ordered my copy, i’m gonna start it next weekend :)

i always thinks of something adrienne maree brown said, that science fiction is the space where we can imagine social justice that doesn’t or hasn’t ever existed in our own societies. she was speaking specifically about octavia butler, and after reading parable of the sower i 100% agree. i feel like a lot of popular science fiction explores our fears & anxieties, but there’s also always been the utopian side of it that gives us permission to dream about the world we *wish* we lived in. this just seems naturally appealing to anyone invested in creating social change, as lefties are

I nominate “Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro 😊

i love that! would you mind starting a post on that topic?
sorry i need to tune out for a few days. obviously a difficult time for the asian american community rn and i’m taking space to process and grieve.
Jason wrote: "Can other factions of Leftism join?”Yes, absolutely! Our DSA chapter spans the gamut from democratic socialists to MLs.

And would you be interested in joining a sci-fi DSA reading group?
Thinking of starting with an Octavia Butler work but not sure which one.
All suggestions welcome!

And did your relationship with these works change as your political journey went on?

i haven’t! is this a good dsa reading group candidate?

Has anyone read
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power or would be interested in reading? I picked it up after watching The Social Dilemma because I was really frustrated with how the doc never explicitly discussed capitalism. I’m on like page 40 but it’s really interesting so far.

What kinds of fiction do y’all read, if any? I love sci-fi, thrillers, and magical realism but I find myself hesitant to pick up a lot of books bc I don’t really wanna read lib shit™ ya know?
