10258 Amanda, I totally agree about Beautiful Boy...I couldn't put it down. It was heartbreaking that the father was so powerless as his son continued to steal, lie, run away, etc., but amazing to see how he coped through it all.

10258 Though this novella is set in Europe, it is really about America. Set against the European values of the time, the protagonist seems a little immoral. James was perhaps mocking her. What do you think? Is she immoral? Or is she just ahead of her time?

10258 Many call this book the first "Great American Novel," and praise it for its use of 'local color.' It also has been famously banned for a number of reasons. Why do you think people call it the Great American Novel? Do you agree? Is this book worth reading, or should we reconsider due to the language?
