Many in response to free shelter say that it’s unfair they worked hard for their home and we give it to someone else for free. But we do not deny children public education because earlier generations had less access to it. We do not deny medical advances because people once suffered without them. The belief that people will use free houses for crime and drugs is an unsupported claim. Crime and addiction exist in housing we pay for. Free isn’t “dangerous.” And fear of a few does not justify withholding benefits from everyone. People misuse nearly every resource society provides, like schools and roads, but we do not eliminate any of those public goods.
