Before Florida grew into the tourist destination it is today, it was originally a subtropical, mosquito-infested backwater peninsula where “civilized” people went to cosplay river explorer on the many ferryboat tours sailing the waters of Flah-rid-uh – including the Ocklawaha River. Locals are more apt to pronounce Florida as Floorda, cutting out the middle syllable completely.
