John of John by Douglas Stuart
"Even as I was ecstatic to have the privilege of reading Stuart's third novel a full six months prior to publication, I also had a touch of trepidation. After two such astonishingly assured works as the Booker-winning Shuggie Bain and the equally enth" Read more of this review »

The Two Roberts by Damian Barr
"Until this book, I had never heard of the two Roberts - Scottish painters who thrived in the post-war years and were lovers between 1933 and the death of Robert Colquhoun in 1962. I found their life stories fascinating, nay enthralling, even in this " Read more of this review »

Jean by Madeleine Dunnigan
"First off, I really do appreciate the ARC via Netgalley and Norton - but sadly, this just did not work for me hardly at all.

“Scrivere vuol dire vivere in uno stato di tensione tra l'arrendersi ai processi inconsci (ovvero aspettare che sia la Musa a ispirarci) e l'imporsi una forma rigorosa su ciò che si sta facendo. Se si possiede solo la tecnica, il lavoro sarà senz'anima, ma se si ha solo l'istinto, il lavoro potrà essere sciatto e troppo personale.”

“How quick, brutal, and fragile is life. You are born, you live a few years in wild hope, then you are dragged back into the night. You might have breathed on a little longer, had you not dared think yourself a human creature instead of an engine of muscle and bone.”
Donna Gillespie, The Light Bearer
