I was born in 1967 in Romania, into a house with thousands of books and a regime that understood exactly how dangerous a story could be.
My mother read me Scheherazade at four. By twelve I had worked through Verne, Christie, Conan Doyle, the American hardboilers. Then the Russians — Gogol above all. Then Kafka, Daniil Kharms, Borges, Márquez, Sabato. Dune. Pratchett. Eugene O'Neill, who taught me that the most dangerous thing a writer can do is tell the truth about what he actually knows.
Meanwhile I was soldering circuits in electronics clubs while next door, ham radio operators sent signals the regime couldn't fully silence. I stopped at fourteen for the usual reasons.
