Excellent point. The book is a love letter to stories. At one point Mirabel says that change is what a story is. Simon says the Owl King is the future coming into the present. He sees the end of the story, just as the painter does, but instead of trying to shut the door, he sends a guide to Zachary to move the story closer to the end. He guides Dorian through the snowy black night. And yes we have to come up with our own answers. We are changed by the story and in retelling we change it too. And as she says, “no story ever truly ends as long as it is told.”
