We agree that story is paramount. I always puzzle over people who rave about an author's mastery of sentences. It's like admiring a car because the tires are well inflated.
Craig, thanks for mentioning Evison, O'Nan, and Egan. I'm not familiar with them, and after reading the summaries of a couple of their novels, they sound like my kind of stories! I must give them a try.
