Katelyn’s answer to “I am a high school resource teacher. Would this be an appropriate book for 9th/10th graders?” > Likes and Comments

It had "low reading level" AND "mature content"? How does that work? Why would you not appreciate "mature content". Would you rather an author talked down to you? Perhaps you should read some of the reviews of the book if you didn't get what the author was seeking to do. Not sure what you meant by atrocious language but have to strongly disagree (but I loved studying Shakespeare - one almost every semester in high school starting with Romeo and Juliet). If you want to have another go at books about the nature of war, try "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" by Richard Flanagan (won the Booker, set in World Wat II, Australian POWs - as the author's father was - working on the Thai-Burma railway being built by the Japanese) and "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque (WWI). Other readers would no doubt be able to suggest more titles, but please give The Things They Carried another go (or at least the first story of the same name - read it aloud to hear the rhythm).
The book seemed to read at a 5th or 6th-grade reading level with regards to vocabulary and sentence structure. But a lot of the content would not be appropriate for younger readers. Another person commented that it has "topics of dope, sex, virginity, love, and war... I believe it is more suited for the college level." That's really what I meant by not appreciating it; I don't mind if the author chooses to include that information but I don't think it belongs in the classroom at that age.
I hope that answers your question. I'm glad you enjoyed the book (as I know many others have) and thank you for the recommendations!
(I changed my initial response slightly only because I realized how rude I sounded initially and I usually try to be as respectful as possible.)
