For what it's worth, I think a lot of the cultural appropriation issue is an over-swing of the pendulum. I think writing about people of other races is a good thing, because otherwise there would be a literary kind of segregation if writers had this feeling that no matter what they wrote it would never satisfy the hyper-vigilant critics who can only condemn from the lofty perch they'd set up for themselves. I think you did it well. (But I'm merely of Dutch extraction, which makes me, by their definition, singularly unqualified to weigh in on that point...)
