London Well, now I'm going to have to reread the last chapter!

Jeanne There were no quotes in the last chapter because all the rest of the book was told by an omniscient narrator, and the last chapter the speaker is the older sister, Alyona. It was beautifully told because the reader could see how she protected and guided her sister. The telling is more powerful than it would have been if it were an omniscient narrator, so the reader hears, sees and knows only what Alyona knew as it happened. I have no doubt that what they heard was their rescuers and that is why Lilia was screaming: to get their attention. A brilliant ending to a work of great depth and nuance!
