Miriam Robarts Looking at it as the whole series, I'd say ALL the guys in this story have questionable motives, or at least their motives have been questionable from Scarlet and Tella's viewpoints.

Tabor True, but Jacks, in my opinion, has highly questionable motives and a chance for a redemption arc, but YA never goes for that.

Miriam Robarts So did Legend--back in Caraval (Book 1), we had no idea what Legend's motives were. He created dangerous games where people can die, nothing is what it seems, and innocent girls are seduced. What kind of 'questionable' are you looking for?

Also, can't a guy have a redemptive arc without being in a romantic relationship?

Tabor Of course, male characters can have a redemption arc without being in a romantic relationship. But what I am trying to say is that usually if a character in YA goes from having questionable motives/evil, they are not the endgame.

As you have pointed out, this happened in the end in Finale, but I apologize for being unclear earlier and using questionable motives loosely. Legend does have questionable motives, but he feels more like a trickster character than someone who has truly evil intentions. Whereas Jacks, as a fate, is borderline hinted to be evil and shown to have disregard for humanity (except maybe if he falls in love). So, Legend = morally grey while Jacks = evil.

That’s why Jacks interests me more as a character and romantic interest because I wonder if you can successfully pull off a redemptive arc for a character, who has done/seems truly evil? And I find that concept really interesting, but I've never seen it done in a YA book. It's just something I’ve been thinking about since reading the Red Queen series!
