Matthew I think I agree that there is only one accident in 2016, which Saul causes deliberately which is why Wolfgang describes it as an act of despair. I also think that this explains why Jennifer didn't notice the blood on his clothes when they were in bed before they broke up - there was no accident in '88! I think the first half of the novel is a dream that mixes the experience of 2016 and 1988 Saul.

Laura I agree that there is only one accident that Saul has conflated into the past. That's why he can't identify the cell phone in his mind in the 1988 version. The "second crossing is where he's going as he's dying.
