G.J. The plagiarism accusation is solidly rooted in the time line. JJM's publisher had the Richardson manuscript for months while it considered whether to publish it. That publisher turned it down but almost instantly one of its other huge authors (JJM) began writing her own version of the same story. The Richardson novel was, in the end, published by another publisher and "launched" about five months before the Moyes' version. But Moyes had more than a year to work with her publisher and the early Richardson manuscript held by her publisher in its "rejected" files.

Sharon Why would an established author with enough imagination to produce book after book, feel the creative need to copy another, a beginner at that?
It's not at all the same story. There are umpteen WW2 novels dealing with similar aspects of the war -- a huge trend right now -- but as far as I know there have been no accusations of plagiarism. It's a very serious accusation and involves a lot more that the same background and location or similar incidents.
Google Opal Mehta to learn what real plagiarism is.
