She does later say at the party though that she's only doing that because Joe has told her she needs to and that she's still an alien. I felt it was deliberately left ambiguous and for the reader to decide.
Earlier in the book she claimed to know nothing about the girl whose body she was using, not even her name. Later she knew all the details of her life leading up to her mother’s death. I think that was what gave it away for me.
