Simply friends yes, but Mary was definitely in love with him and Dickon had strong feelings for her as well
It’s pretty clear that they may have started out as just friends, but they bonded so strongly and quickly, I don’t think they stayed only friends. It’s both innocent and erotic. Dickon was the first boy she ever trusted to show her secret garden/womb symbol and he helped her with pruning and planting seeds.
