Looked to me like the sirens were otherwise very willing to sacrifice themselves for the group/for the female which they depend on for making more sirens...

No problem. I'm guessing that if the sirens are an intelligent species and capable of independent thought, then there might be individuals who operate apart from the pack (like lone wolves). I suppose these individuals could be more self-interested and less self-sacrificing than the others.
