She was risking everything when she sent the information out as it could have only come from her. She knew that it would mean the end, so she needed a person to carry it out and I think she felt like Nicole would have the best chance of getting out alive because she didn't think Judd would kill her since Gilead made such a big deal about wanting her back. They had DNA to prove who she was.
Hmmm, it makes sense that Nicole would have been protected by her very identity. But wouldn't the explosive cache - copied onto multiple pamphlets - have much higher chances of reaching Canada, than relying on ONE person only? Also, I'm not convinced that the explosive cache would have guaranteed the collapse of Gilead. Look at regimes like North Korea - citizens escape and publish memoirs / release information on the horrible things going on there, and yet the regime does not collapse. If anything, the local news is so censored, such information never reaches its citizens.
It was an all or nothing type deal. If the info I had fallen into the hands of someone in Gilead then Aunt Lydia would have been exposed and measures could have been taken to deal with the threat. Multiple pamphlets carrying the information would have increased the likelihood of it falling into the wrong hands so it was a one shot type deal. It would either work or not. Also it wasn't just the information alone it was the very fact that Commander Judd and Aunt Lydia (two of the highest level people) had Baby Nicole back in Gilead and allowed her to escape which sparked purges It wasn't so much that the normal everyday citizens revolted. But that the people at the top (who would have access to the info no matter how heavily censored the general populations news was) no longer trusted each other and had dirt on one another.
Think more French Revolution and less North Korea. After Robespierre and the other Jacobin leaders had all the aristocrats killed they started turning on one another.
I see your point. But wouldn't it be the case that having the info "fall into the hands of someone in Gilead" would be a good thing and the ultimate aim - to sow distrust among those at the top? Thus, the multiple-pamphlet approach would have been far better? And wouldn't Aunt Lydia have been exposed either way - pamphlet or tattoo? I was under the impression that only Aunt Lydia and Commander Judd knew that Baby Nicole was back in Gilead.
In fact, if the ultimate aim was to sow discord among those leading Gilead, why didn't Aunt Lydia make a copy of the actual file 100 times (no microdot needed) and send it to all Commanders in one go? That would do the job far more effectively.
