Kyla Ruth had been married to a man, therefore, in the mindset of the time, she couldn't have been one of "those" women and so she and Idgie were "just good friends." Even if people more or less knew a couple was a couple, the previous hetero relationship allowed them to politely look the other way. "Don't ask, don't tell" was not a concept exclusive to the military. Whether or not their relationship actually crossed into the sexual or not, emotionally it was definitely a romantic one, and at the very least, Idgie was lesbian. It's not at all unusual today for people who don't realize they're gay or who can't accept it to marry and have children before giving in to accepting their sexuality and getting involved with a member of the same sex.

Fata Morgana Thanks, Kyla, for that informing comment

Kyla My pleasure! My own GF/Spouse/SO was married to a man before we met, so I've learned a bit from her on how that works. Since we're on Goodreads anyway, "Another Mother Tongue" by Judy Grahn is a fascinating and informative look into Lesbian history and culture in the US, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
