Lois Level In the clip of the movie I saw, there was definitely an edge to Mia when she asks Mr.s R. if she wants her to be "the maid". That line is definitely not in the book (page 69). So there does not need to be, but I'm guessing their is.

Melissa Having read the book and watching ONLY the first episode of the show so far, I think it makes a HUGE difference. I think the character was written as white but easily changed to black. So far race has been a major plot point. From the line about "the maid" and that she "doesn't really do that", where in the novel she did sometimes take cleaning jobs, to the scene with the neighborhood watch and the junkyard, there was another whole layer of panic and underlying message from the Kerry Washington version of Mia. I very much felt the commentary about the fact that she partially feared for Pearl being black in this situation, as opposed to just being worried about being found by the Ryan's.

There was also a scene on the subway that suggested that she is a lesbian, which to me doesn't jive with the whole virgin and child theme.
