Sadly poets rarely earn a pittance from their work unless they publish an anthology. You are right, though about how did she know where to get them published? Unless, her publisher in Greenville pointed her to some literary magazines. Those are usually two different worlds.
Agree that her being the poet seemed far fetched - local publications probably didn't pay but how did she figure out that whole system? Nah. And why did she never tell her beloved husband that she was the poet? They were so "connected" but she didn't share that? I ended up feeling manipulated by the author, made to feel so much sympathy for this poor dear girl who it turns out murdered someone in cold blood. Yikes. Clever but not satisfying.
Being a poet was a story device. Her Amanda poems told the truth of her life and feelings.
What bothered me was her sleeping on the porch. Later she turned her parents bedroom into a shrine for her nests/paintings and stuff.
The siblings slept on mattress beds on the floor. Where? Even after her book money came in and she remodeled the shack, I got no sense or more than that one bedroom .
