Christiehickory Michelle how do we know which is the "what if" and which is the true ending?

Michelle Because of the judge's ruling. He ruled for the hospital and Pip. That's what really happened.

Christiehickory I just finished the book last night and looked at it again this morning and don't see where the judges ruling is ever revealed. That final chapter it shows Leila leaving the courtoom before the verdict is said.

Leatrice Berman The judge ruled in favor of the hospital. Had he not, there would be no second child.

Christiehickory I read it differently I guess in that it was 2 alternate endings. Neither was the "real" ending.

Deana Christiehickory, I agree

Cheryl I also read it as two alternate endings. I just looked at the book again to be sure....there is the quote about two roads diverging and then Chapter 24 - Pip is the judge ruling for the hospital and Chapter 24 - Max is the judge ruling against the hospital and letting them take him to the US. After that it's alternating chapters between each 'path' taken. Followed by the end chapter that goes back to "before the end" when Leila leaves the courtroom before any verdict is given.

Leah I just rechecked in case I was rereading the whole second half incorrectly. Cheryl is right. Chapter 24 has the judge ruling for Pip and 25 has the judge ruling for Max. I was totally confused by Pip''s ending, too. But I think she married Max. In Chap 50 it's 2017 and they both seemed unsure of what they want in the future. But at the wedding in Chap 52, it's 2019 and even though it says she feels a skip in her heart when Las looks at her (she still loves him?) The next sentence it says he does a gentlemanly bow and nods in admiration (graciously letting her go?) Then in the last paragraph it reads "the registrar is asking if...everyone could please take their seats now? Jada finds a SPOT next to Lars, and I STAND next to Max." (Lars is sitting?) Yes, I probably overthought this, it's my thing. Regardless, it really makes me wish she had told us the court's "actual" decision. I felt unsettled at the end. Probably her intent.

Mary Varilek I was questioning and re-reading the ending as well. I agree with Cheryl. Two different endings.....just like the entire second half of the book detailed. Probably the authors intent to have the readers questioning what the future would be like for Max and Pip.

Michelle I concede! Yes, two different endings. Two different roads. Sorry for my error. 🙂
