I think this is a great interpretation. To clarify, you think that Otto died at the end, not in the war as the original questioner supposed?
I just finished this book today, and I agree with Ross, that Otto died at the end. And, I think, because Etta and Otto have such a strong connection, she is able to see his spirit in the water and they can say their final good byes.
I just finished this book and half-understood the ending, but couldn't find words that explained how I interpreted this book. I found what you shared really resonated with me so thank you!
