I think they killed her in her human form. The Drafts/Darlings/Bunny Boys all seem to turn back into their animal form when axed. Max is the only one who lives past that, which could be due to his size.
I think too that both Max and Ava were more fully former, more realistically human than the Darlings/Drafts/Bunny Boys which drew the Bunnies to Samantha in the first place. She had more power than they did and didn't know it, they wanted to channel it and when they couldn't, hated Samantha.
