The whole book is filled with inaccuracies and poor research like this.
I took hearing about it on the news to mean one of 2 things--a newspaper report or a radio report --most everyone had some kind of radio including diners and homes in the late 1940s after the war--remember the fireside chats by FDR they were so popular because of the radio broadcasts. Plus Grace despite living poorly, came from a wealthy background.
