Thanks for answering! Yeah, I've been writing both employed and unemployed. Enjoy the small time between jobs to get everything plotted and ready to go.
And anything you can do to lower your overall cost of living and your recurring monthly bills is going to be a big help. You can always spend the money a la carte when you have it. A savings account with 3-6 months of living expenses stashed away doesn't hurt. The rest really depends on what kind of writing you want to do. Content marketing tends to pay better than journalism, and both pay better than essays, fiction, or poetry.
I was thinking on fiction and poetry for the most part. I love entering contests (which would be great when you're the winner lol) but I'm working on savings. I'll definitely have to re-budget before taking the big leap.
My favourite book that touches this topic is "The Gift" by Lewis Hyde, Basically, an artist has to deal with the market economy one way or the other (even though art sits uncomfortably within it). You can either get a benefactor to do that for you (nice gig!), have a dayjob, or try to make money off your art (but risk turning it into a commodity moreso than a work of art). Every path has pros and cons.
