Lisa The split is even more than just about education. As Tara mentions, those that were educated had an opportunity to support themselves and were not financially dependent on her father or mother. I wonder what side her eldest brother would be if his trucking business had not failed and he also came back to be supported on the now thriving oil business of his mother. It only makes the situation that more complicated. Resilience against so many odds. Jeanette Walls and her brother become educated and survive despite their mentally disturbing upbringing as well. Their "successes" do not make their upbringing ok or more palatable. It can be a fine line intervening in someone's parental right as someone mentioned previously. Funny how someone will usually say something against a spanking or yelling in public to a child but do nothing against something like this, what I feel, abusive situation. The woman is right, what could DSF do? they weren't starving, they had clothes, I can't believe the safety issues weren't a way to intervene. A very thought provoking memoir, triumphant but also sad. I am very thankful that she was willing to share her journey, but more importantly her angst and thoughts through this journey. This notion that blood is thicker than water -is a strong cord to cut. I struggle with this and have not experienced anything close to what Tara has experienced.
