I too wondered when and how she purchased the disguises. I also wondered how Chase happened to be near the tower for her to lure him there all in such a limited amount of time for her to commit the murder and catch the last bus.
Yeah...a lot of assumptions to build, weren't there?
I guess we were purposefully left in the dark about those details for suspense factor.
Tate and Jumpin crossed my mind but i knew there was no way they would let her be tried for murder if they had done it. I loved the book and I think it further proved the Kya was truly one with nature.
it was perfectly natural for Kya to lure Chase because she knew it was the only way to survive.....she studied survival techniques in nature and was not gong to be her mother. It was a perfect ending to me.
The purchasing the disguises was the thing that ruined the book for me. Believed the ending but don't find it believable that people wouldn't have noticed her purchasing a grey granny wig????
I liked the ending, and I too thought it was Tate or Jumpin', especially after the red hat scene with Tate. However, reflecting on the disguises it is in line with what she observed in nature. Female and male creatures luring mates (or victims) in disguise. I wondered if she purchased the disguises in Greenville. She was too smart to know she couldn't make an odd purchase in her town. Plus by that point she would have had to money to do so.
Mabel could have provided her some disguises, either on purpose or inadvertently, in some of the bags of donated items. It certainly was well-planned, and she must have done a great job with the disguises and body language to be able to slip past the hotel clerk (I don't remember - maybe she could have climbed out of and back into the hotel window) and the bus drivers.
The book mentions Kya buying items from a Sears and Roebuck catalog after she started making money from her books. She certainly didn't buy those furnishings and her more professional clothes in town. So my assumption is she bought the old lady wig and any other part of her disguise by mail order.
Oooh, I like that, Christ. But was there time between the impulse to buy and the delivery before the murder?
I do not think the gray haired lady was Kaya.
The luring of Chase was not plausible. Had she contacted him prior to, telling him to meet her at the tower? She could not have known the bus would be late. And did no one notice her boat was not docked?
It takes a bit of imagination to see how she could return in disguise, take her boat to the tower, return, then get back on the bus.
Why change to disguise herself as an old lady, rather than take the bus back as the same thin man?
