Betsy Schweers George was, in fact, a pallbearer at her funeral. She was 70 when she died which, maybe at that time, was considered old.

Bridget I believe this a book based on history. Let's talk about that phrase based on history. The blind side is a book based on actual events that happen recently and it has been proven to be FICTIONAL. So we will take the based on history part with a grain of salt.

Jessie Yes, much of the book is pure fiction - the relationship between Eliza and Ben. This is contrived specifically to manipulate the reader into feeling further that Eliza was a purely good person, with only the best intentions for her slaves and not a "bad" slaveowner. But she still held slaves and this book is too apologist about it in its presentation, going so far as to say she was in love with one of her slaves.

Norma Liza was a 16-year girl who was given the huge task/responsibility of running the plantation and keeping her father apprised of all of her decisions. She had a heart for the people of the plantation, the slaves, and treated them with respect and kindness, even teaching them to read in classes in her house.. Later she built a house for more of them to learn. In no way do I condone slavery however, it was the way of her world. She took great care to manage the details of her charge with maturity and compassionate concern for her people. It is a story based on true situations and her attention to her responsibility at that age and in her particular situation is admirable. She took the task her father had given her and managed it well.
