i missed the detail about the motel desk manager, so your thought makes more sense than anything i can think of. she intentionally acted like she didn't know how to use a phone so the desk manager would witness that. but Kya was never a plotter/schemer before, so it is out of character. i didn't see her as a killer, either, just as someone who might kill in self-defense. it's just kind of a shock that she would act so out of character.
I don't think she had ever used a phone before. About out of character--again and again in the story she sees and thinks about how harsh things are in Nature; to her it was an objective fact.
i think she did that (made the call) but that jumpin met him at the tower...
