G I think it was inevitable that Chase would kill her -- and no one would ever even miss her body in the marshes. She knew this and acted to save her own life.

Julie But it made no sense to me that Kya travelled back to the tower and that she KNEW Chase would be there. She had fled from him before after he attempted to rape her. That was 'thin' and hard to believe for me.

G The only way it works, IMO, for Chase to have met her there was that -- like the fireflies -- she 'changed her signal' and found a way to convince him that she wanted to meet him for sex. A guy as conceited as Chase might actually believe it, if she was devious enough. The timing troubles me, though, because the bus was late. Would a guy like that really wait around for Kya to show up?

Wendy @G - You already said, everything I would have. And, YES, he would have waited. He had a thing for her and would never have passed up a chance.

Beverly I totally agree. Not only was he obsessed with her, he was also conceited enough to be sure that she would definitely show up.

Hillary Lui I wish the author had somehow included hints of this (Kya's true motives), however subtly in the ending to tie the whole story together

Sandra Does anyone else think that Jumpin was involved and he and Kya rugged it up together? How did she get back in time to boat over to the tower and kill Chase Just an interesting thought.

Andrea Sandra = that would have been interesting, but I don't think Jumpin was involved. In Chapter 48, it states that Kya returned from Greenville 2 days later (as scheduled) and she had promised to let Jumpin know when she was back but decided to wait until the next day since she noticed he was busy with customers. She then told him the following day that she "got back yesterday" at which point he told her that Chase had died. If Jumpin was involved, he wouldn't have had to tell her that Chase was found dead, and she wouldn't have waited an extra day to tell Jumpin that she had returned. On the other hand, I think Jumpin slowly realized Kya was the one who had killed Chase. Apparently Kya didn't tell her lawyer about the sexual assault which would have undoubtedly brought Jumpin to the witness stand as an outcry witness.

George Andrea: Jumpin' was black. I suppose it would by 1970 have been legal for him to testify, but the all-white jury wouldn't have accepted it as right!
