I assumed that Kerrigan's loyalty was in question for not being up front in his report on the Florida assignment (though I didn't completely understand what was going on there)...as to Mr. Q & Arthur, I'm sure that was implied, but I guess the author wants to guess at how it came about (did Dexter's wife go to her Dad re: the infidelity?)
I was also confused about the reason for the attempt in Eddie’s life and for Dexter’s murder. According to one review Eddie betrayed Dexter to the cops but if that happened I missed it! The same review said Dexter was murdered because of his rejected business proposition to Mr Q, which if true is very weak. Also, how did Eddie know he would be poisoned and not shot by Dexter. Seems an unlikely way for a mobster to kill a snitch.
Eddie saw his district-attorney friend — one of the friends he saved from drowning — at the other’s funeral, asked if he was going after “the syndicate” and said he could help. The friend said “What do you know about it?” And Eddie said “Everything.” Also, Dexter guessed that the brother-in-law who was having the affair with Dexter’s wife’s sister told her dad he’d seen Dexter driving off with Anna. The dad had earlier said that betraying the daughter was absolutely forbidden, and when Dexter said he understood, his wife’s dad said rather ominously, “You don’t. You can’t.” and that he hoped for Dexter’s “own sake” that he would keep his promise. Mr. Q probably also knew what had happened in the boat house (the dropped stocking, etc.). There were several hints that the father-in-law and Q were more connected than they let on.
Thanks Doris! I thought Eddie was an informant, but I couldn't remember where I got that impression.
Doris' answer is spot on. Also, during Dexter's death scene, he realized that he must no longer be necessary to connect his FIL with Mr. Q. My best guess is that Mr. Q took Dexter's bond scheme to the FIL, thereby giving both men a "legitimate" channel to communicate thus making Dexter's link between them no longer necessary, and most likely a liability. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the FIL had agreed to Dexter & Harriet's engagement in part with the goal of making connections with Mr. Q sometime in the future. He was definitely presented as the kind of man who would & could set up the proverbial chess pieces and wait a very long time to get what he wanted.
Concur with these questions. I think the author left too many loose threads for it to be a good story all together. Is the reader just gonna make up stuff on her own? If so, in my mind, Eddie was tired of his family life with a poor crippled daughter. He was ashamed of his family. So he snitched on the mob to his state Attorney childhood friend. As a way out.
