I agree. I appreciate that the author being Japanese may have a different perspective and another comment referenced Japanese and Russian students studying this book don't question why at least one character didn't make a run for it. However, the book is set in the west (England) therefore it obviously becomes an issue for many readers from the west as to why at least some of these characters from the west (albeit clones) wouldn't try to escape, even if it failed terribly.
They aren't as you say from "the West". Not from our version of the west. They aren't English, they have no state.
Their reality is not one that any of us could possibly comprehend.
How is it so hard to fathom that their experience is so very different from mine or yours that their reactions, actions or motivations would also be totally different?
Where would they escape to?
What life could they imagine?
What experience do they have to suggest that there is something better?
Westerners act the exact same way and are extremely obedient to their indoctrinated systems in reality, they just like to pretend differently in their fiction.
Long ago I read a review of, I think, Ishiguro's work in general. The writer called him "the most English of all contemporary authors" (or to that effect). Certainly his family must have inculcated some amount of Japanese outlook, but I think Ishiguro is a universal writer. This book is about how our cultural milieu makes it impossible in most cases to break free of what should be intolerable.
